Obturation
Obturation is the three-dimensional filling of the cleaned and shaped canal system to prevent reinfection.
Materials
- Gutta-percha — the most common core material (β-form in points).
- Sealer — fills voids and bonds GP to dentin; AH Plus (epoxy resin) is widely used. Bioceramic sealers are increasingly popular.
Techniques
- Cold lateral condensation — traditional gold standard; spreader compacts accessory points.
- Warm vertical compaction (Schilder) — better fills lateral canals/irregularities.
- Thermoplasticised/carrier-based systems for speed.
Ideal Endpoint
A dense fill to the apical constriction with a good apical seal and no voids.
Exam Tips ⭐
GP = core; AH Plus = popular sealer; lateral condensation = classic gold standard; warm vertical = Schilder.
