Corticosteroids & Antifungals
Topical Steroids
Triamcinolone acetonide (e.g., in an oral paste) is widely used for oral ulcerative/immune-mediated lesions (lichen planus, aphthae). Systemic steroids for severe vesiculobullous disease, with awareness of adrenal suppression and infection risk.
Antifungals
- Nystatin — topical antifungal of choice for oral candidiasis (not absorbed).
- Fluconazole — systemic antifungal of choice (azole; CYP interactions).
- Clotrimazole troches as an alternative topical agent.
Inhaled-steroid users should rinse the mouth to prevent candidiasis.
Exam Tips ⭐
Triamcinolone = common topical oral steroid; nystatin = topical antifungal of choice; fluconazole = systemic.
