Medical Emergencies & Drugs
- Vasovagal syncope — the most common dental office emergency; position supine, legs raised.
- Anaphylaxis — first drug is epinephrine IM (adult 0.3-0.5 mg, anterolateral thigh) + airway/oxygen + antihistamine/steroid as adjuncts.
- Angina — sublingual nitroglycerin.
- Hypoglycemia — oral glucose if conscious; IV dextrose/glucagon if not.
- Seizure — protect the patient; benzodiazepine (midazolam) for prolonged seizures.
Preparedness
Maintain an emergency kit and oxygen; know basic life support.
